WHAT IS AN EGG SHELL RIPPER?

The egg shell ripper is a simple device created to make the job of peeling eggs easier. It really is as simple as 1, 2, 3!

Peeling hard boiled eggs is one of the most frustrating kitchen tasks. Rarely does a hand peeled egg come out perfectly, and more often than not, part of the egg sticks to the shell, making for an unappetizing final product.

Over the years, many devices have been created to aid the cook in this process, but most of them don’t work very well or are better suited to a commercial kitchen environmant and are not practical for home use.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Create a small break in the larger end of the egg by tapping the shell with the Egg Shell Ripper handle.

2. Start by inserting the center prong of the Egg Shell Ripper into the break of the shell. Keep the center prong under the shell, while the outer prongs stay outside of the shell. Gently push along the contour of the eggshell and continue to the opposite end of the egg. For best results, make three rips in the shell, spaced evenly around the egg.

3. Gently pull off the  three sections of the shell and rinse the egg. Then, enjoy!

Tips for Cooking Hard-Boiled Eggs

  • Start with eggs that don’t have any visible cracks.
  • Do not add salt to the water. The salt will raise the boiling point of the water making the egg whites rubbery.
  • The best eggs for boiling are NOT the freshest eggs, use eggs that are at least 3 to 5 days old.
  • Bring your eggs to room temperature before cooking. By bringing the eggs to room temperature, they’re much less likely to crack in the hot water. Also, the temperature of the egg at the start of the cooking process will affect the cooking time.
  • Choose the right size pot to cook your eggs in. Gently place the eggs in a single layer in a pan with enough cold water to cover the eggs completely.
  • Over high heat, bring water just to a rapid boil. As soon as the water reaches a rapid boil, remove pan from heat and cover tightly with a lid. Set a timer for 17 minutes for large eggs or 20 minutes for jumbo eggs. After the time is up, remove the lid and drain off the water from the eggs.
  • It is very important to stop the cooking process. Transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice cubes and cold water. While they are in cold water, a layer of steam develops between the shell and the egg white. The steam helps make peeling an egg much easier.
  • Refrigeration is necessary for hard boiled eggs. It is preferable to not peel your eggs until you are ready to eat them or use in a recipe.
